Opposition view Swindon (H)

Before we look at the game, could you give us a memory from previous games against the Gas?

In terms of games at the Memorial, watching on-loan former prospect Islam Feruz labour through one of his final games in professional football back in 2017. Poor Izzy looked like an U12 playing against adults.

Oh and I remember back in 2007 watching two fans fighting on Gloucester Road with one helping himself to a plank of wood from outside a nearby DIY shop to gain himself an advantage. Good times…

How has your season been going so far?

It’s going okay, Swindon have won 3, drawn 4 and lost 2.

The club flirted with the abyss during what was a very stressful summer. Town started the season well behind the rest in terms of preparation with your old pal Ben Garner being appointed 17 days before the new season with Town having only 8 contracted players at the club. He has, however, improved our defensive play significantly with a decent partnership at the back between captain Dion Conroy and Romoney Crichlow (on loan from Huddersfield) building into a strong partnership.

And what would you say your ambitions are for the rest of the campaign?

The notion of expectations has been a big talking point in recent weeks amongst Swindon supporters.

The owner and CEOs target is to avoid relegation but early decent form really resulted in fans not fully buying into such a negative objective.

If Town keep in touch with the Play-Off places going into January then I’d hope the club try to strengthen and give promotion a real go but I’m happy to go along the clubs target given the summer we had.

How is your form coming into the game?

3-1, 1-2, 0-0, 1-0, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-1 and 0-0.

As you can see the main issue is scoring goals. Swindon average one goal a game and the 3-1 win over Scunthorpe on the opening day is currently the clubs only game this season where they’ve scored more than once.

Some fans cite the lack of an experienced/clinical centre forward while others put it down to Garner’s style of play which seems to be quite conservative.

How do you think you’ll setup for our game?

Either 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1. I don’t see Garner unleashing a fresh set-up.

Any weak links in your side?

It’s unfair and outright wrong to say Tyreece Simpson, as our only out-and-out centre forward, is our weak link as we don’t score goals but we need more contributions from the rest of the side in front of goal.

Who are your standout players?

Our better players like Louis Reed, Jojo Wollacott and Jack Payne tend to go about their business quietly. All three are far too good for L2, in my opinion.

If the loanees Kaine Kesler-Hayden (Aston Villa), Alex Gilbert (Brentford) and Tyreece Simpson (Ipswich) play to the full of their ability then they will catch the eye.

Game prediction

Town are quite good away from home but I have a bad feeling about this one especially after your late win over Walsall.

Where do you think you’ll be come the end of the season?

Top 10.

I think Swindon can compete with all clubs within L2 but I’m not convinced Town will quite have enough to return to L1 straight away but think we’ll get more positive results than negative.
