MATCH PREVIEW: Bristol Rovers v Sutton United

GasCast Match Previews by Simon Gray

Bristol Rovers host Sutton United this week hoping to capitalise on one of their many games in hand on the teams above them.

The Gas drew 0-0 with promotion hopefuls Mansfield Town at the weekend leaving them 10 points off Newport with three games in hand on the seventh-placed side.

Rovers have 18 games remaining of the season, with most Tuesday nights now involving The Gas and manager Joey Barton has had his say on his side’s promotion chances.

“There’s lots of games still to play,” Barton told BristolLive in his post-match interview at the weekend.

“There was 57 points to play for before today, so now 54. We feel like if that’s the form team in the football league, we feel like we can beat anybody on our day if we get it right.

“We’re yet to see a consistent team selection of our strongest 11. We’ve seen a small glimpse of that in the Swindon game and we need to be putting that on the pitch more often.

“I’m a massive believer in doing things right and the score eventually takes care of itself. I’m just seeing things now, you’re seeing the energy in the stands.

“We might run out of games this season, but the Gas are coming, it’s happening.”

Barton will be without Antony Evans for the midweek match as he continues to recover from a tight hamstring. Ryan Loft is also still missing with a back injury.

Sutton go into the game unbeaten in 12 in all competitions, drawing their last three, including a 1-1 draw with Tuesday’s opponents just over a week ago.

Manager Matt Gray has been praised for how well last year’s National League Champions have adapted to life in the football league and they now have their eyes on a play-off place come the end of the season if not better.

Gray has no new injury concerns ahead of the game and may look to name the same side that held table-topping Forest Green Rovers at the weekend.
